Social Movement Technologies

SMT helps social change groups run more powerful campaigns and build movement power by providing support in three ways:

1. Online training. SMT has trained people from 4,400+ groups globally in its first 10 years. 1000+ people have graduated from its Digital Campaigning Certificate Intensive. Live trainings run regularly throughout the year; a library of 150+ hours of on-demand recordings is used by 100+ people per month from across the globe. Trainings are instructed in English, French and Spanish, with subtitles in 7 languages.

2. Coaching/accompaniment. SMT works more in-depth with individual groups and with cohorts of groups, to help them implement. This starts with a quick assessment of their offline/online campaigns, capacity and resources. Three to four areas of high opportunity are identified and we meet with the group usually once every week or two to ramp up in these areas. This can include target research, campaign strategy, narrative development, storytelling coaching, Twitter strategy development for media coverage, developing the supporter pipeline, email list building and curation, action tool setup, tech stack development, digital security, SMS tools, and much more. In 2023 SMT is working with 65 groups.

3. Direct campaign support. SMT can take on responsibility in campaigns to help expand staff capacity at key moments, for example, to run ad campaigns,  orchestrate a Twitterstorm, create videos, launch an SMS program, set up Whatsapp mass messaging and lots more.

SMT's team includes staff in Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, the MENA region, and North America. We have a language team of about 20 people, train in 4 languages and often offer interpretation to 7 languages.
