Our Services

At Nonprofit Builder, we believe that real capacity building starts with understanding each organization’s unique situation and matching them with the right kind of support. From one-to-one consulting and coaching to group training, small grants, cohort programs, and peer learning, we offer a complete ecosystem of services that help grantees grow stronger, more confident, and more effective in their mission.

Every partnership starts with listening

When a new foundation comes to us, our first step is to listen. Then we co-create a support program with you, of any form or size, built around what your grantees need most. The services below are the building blocks.

One-to-One Consulting

Our flagship service is one-to-one consulting: the most direct and effective way for grantees to receive expert support tailored to their real-world challenges. Whether it’s clarifying strategy, strengthening teams, or improving internal systems, our consultants work side by side with grantees to deliver lasting change in an area important to them.

“We have greatly valued the support we received through Nonprofit Builder which covered organisational development, creating a fundraising strategy and coaching for the co-Directors. These interventions built our capacity and strengthened our ability to deliver our mission of uniting our city to end homelessness. This has had a hugely positive impact on the charity.”
Caring in Bristol, Grantee

What makes it unique

  • High quality at every stage, from consultant vetting to project check-ins and post-project reviews
  • Multiple ways to identify the right project, from self-guided exploration to facilitated assessments
  • Flexible formats: Most of our projects range from 5 to 10 consulting days, where we provide the most value. We offer a range of services, from 10-hour coaching packages to multi-expert consulting projects. A global and diverse expert pool offering local understanding and fresh international perspectives
  • Grantees in full control: they choose the topic, duration, timing, and consultant, ensuring ownership and success

Our consultants

Quality is paramount, and it starts with who we work with.

  • Close to the people they work with. Grantees want someone who understands their culture and context. That's why our pool is so large and spread across every region, so everyone can find their perfect match.
  • Known and followed closely. We track each consultant's performance, with a feedback report after every intervention. Foundations get the same information we do.
  • Nonprofit professionals. Our consultants are full-time professionals who are committed to working with nonprofits or have significant nonprofit experience.

“NPB has been a great platform for me. Not only has it connected me to other like minded people, trying to do our bit to help, but has opened up opportunities to a wide and rich variety of projects. The people I've linked up with on projects have been so passionate and knowledgable about their cause, its been really inspiring.”
Mark Attree, Consultant

The grantee is in the driving seat

We're happy to help grantees think through their needs, point them in the right direction and suggest a match. Then the grantee takes the initiative: they contact the consultant and book the first meeting themselves. Many interview more than one consultant, so they're sure to find someone they like.

This keeps ownership, and success, very high.

“The matchmaking process was seamless; the platform recommended three consultants who all responded promptly. After interviewing two candidates, we selected Tend Consulting. They were fantastic and truly went above and beyond—even traveling to Paris to facilitate an in-depth training workshop for our team.”

Training and Capacity Building

Beyond consulting, we offer a curated selection of training courses specifically designed for nonprofit leaders and teams seeking to strengthen their skills and apply new tools immediately.

“Through this course, I have received actual tools that are simple to implement which I can see will raise our productivity and strengthen our organisation. It is a refreshing change from other courses which seem to be heavy on theory but unable to address real life challenges.”
Deafkidz International, Grantee

Coaching for Leaders and Organizations

Leadership can be a lonely place. Many nonprofit leaders find themselves carrying heavy responsibilities without a safe, experienced sounding board. Coaching offers that space: a confidential, reflective partnership that helps leaders think clearly, make better decisions, and grow in confidence and self-awareness.

“Lakshmi's coaching and expertise has helped me grow and build a global team more equitably and thoughtfully - she has been an incredible resource during difficult moments with really tangible ways to apply our sessions to my work day-to-day, while also looking for themes to focus on over time. I am incredibly grateful to Nonprofit Builder for providing the platform and resources for Lakshmi and I to connect.”
Open Supply Hub (OS Hub), Grantee

Two types of coaching we offer

Leadership and Executive Coaching

Focused on personal effectiveness, communication, confidence, and leadership presence. These sessions help leaders clarify goals, manage complexity, and lead with authenticity and impact.

Capacity and Organizational Coaching

Designed for leaders who want to strengthen their organizations from within. Topics may include how to structure the team, work with the board, manage growth, or adapt the organization’s culture as it evolves.

Why coaching is such a valuable form of support

  • It goes beyond technical advice to address the mindsets and relationships that shape real progress
  • It offers continuity: most coaching relationships last several months and provide steady, ongoing support
  • It is highly cost-effective, offering long-term impact at a fraction of the cost of traditional consulting
  • Most of our coaches are professionally certified, and all follow the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics
  • Coachees have full agency and can pause or stop at any time, ensuring that the process always remains relevant and voluntary

Whether the goal is to grow as a leader, navigate change, or simply have a trusted space to think aloud with someone who understands organizational life, our coaches provide a rare combination of empathy, experience, and actionable insight.

Cohort-Based Support Programs

When several grantees share similar challenges or opportunities, a cohort approach can be the most powerful way to support them together, building shared learning, peer exchange, and collective capacity.

Our cohort programs are designed on the cost-effective “funnel” model: all grantees benefit from the group learning components, while those showing the most interest and readiness may access the individual consulting. This ensures all have equal access and the most active users have the extra support they need.

Ideal for

  • Early-stage grantees participating in incubators or accelerators
  • Organizations working on the same theme or geography
  • Foundations preparing to exit a region and seeking to strengthen local partners

Program design

  • A custom mix of 3–5 expert consultants covering key areas such as strategy, fundraising, leadership, communications, and MEL
  • A combination of group workshops, one-to-one coaching, or peer-learning sessions
  • The same trainers follow the group throughout, ensuring continuity and deeper understanding

Helping Grantees Understand Their Needs

Before any project begins, it’s important for organizations to understand what kind of support they actually need. Nonprofit Builder offers several ways to help grantees clarify their priorities and choose the right path forward.

Discovery Calls (Motivational Interviewing)

A 45-minute conversation with our team helps grantees reflect on:

  • Their aspirations and goals
  • What’s holding them back
  • The kind of support that could help them move forward

Organizational Health Check and OD Roadmap

A facilitated assessment led by an expert consultant, using methodologies such as the Bridgespan Organizational Assessment System.

  • Produces a confidential diagnostic report on strengths and weaknesses
  • Includes an OD roadmap that can be shared with the foundation for joint planning
“We highly recommend Solomon Makuza to our colleagues and friends for his exceptional expertise in organizational health assessments. His professionalism, thoroughness, and insightful guidance have been instrumental in our organization's growth and sustainability.”
Hope of Family, Grantee

Symptom and Solutions Browser

A simple, intuitive self-service tool that helps grantees connect their challenges to possible solutions.

  • Browse by topic and identify common organizational “symptoms”
  • Discover relevant project types and trainings
  • Ideal for grantees who are new to organizational development concepts

Portfolio-Wide Survey

We can help foundations run a survey across their whole portfolio of grantees and analyze the results, so support goes where it's needed most. We usually do this as part of our cohort programs.
